Presenting the Pollinators
Beetles & Flies
There are more than 340,000 beetles on this planet that have been identified. They may have been the very first insect pollinator on this planet. The sheer number of beetles makes them significant in the world of pollinators. They may tend to destroy a flower in the process; however, they still are transferring pollen from one flower to another. They are especially important in tropical or desert areas.
Some flies actually mimic the look of bees. Flies aren’t the greatest pollinators, however, they do have pollinator potential and should be respected for that. In the process of feeding on flower nectar, they may transfer pollen to another flower, but their bodies tend to be smooth so it is harder for pollen to stick to them. Carrots, onions and strawberries are some plants that can be pollinated by flies. Next time a fly gets into your house, you might want to think twice about swatting it.
